Today’s boaters expect fast, dependable Wi-Fi at your marina — and if you don’t deliver, someone else will.

Here’s a quick checklist to make sure your marina network is ready to keep guests connected:

Start with a Strong Internet Backbone

Use high-speed fiber or cable at the marina office. Everything builds from here.

Strategic Access Point Placement

Install outdoor-rated access points along docks, spaced every 200–300 feet, for consistent coverage across all slips.

Strategic Access Point placement for reliable Wi-Fi

Important for Larger Vessels:

For marinas with bigger boats (40 feet and up), do not rely on an access point more than 100–125 feet away from the vessel.

  • Below deck, Wi-Fi signals must pass through fiberglass, electronics, and bulkheads.

  • Beyond 150 feet, the signal becomes too weak for reliable streaming, browsing, or calling.

  • On deck, where there’s line-of-sight, you can stretch distances a little more — ideal for smaller marinas with lighter traffic.

Plan for Pole-Mounted Access Points: Power and Weatherproofing

When installing remote access points down the docks, power is required at the pole where each AP is mounted.

  • Use a weatherproof enclosure near the base of the pole (like a small NEMA box).

  • The box should be big enough to hold a few PoE injectors and possibly a small PoE switch.

  • From there, you only need to run Ethernet cables up the pole to feed the bridge and access point — no need to run high-voltage AC up the entire length.

  • This setup reduces complexity, improves safety, and keeps your marina looking clean and professional.

  • Use NEMA boxes with lockable tabs, to prevent guests from tampering with the equipment.
  • Place them in positions on the dock for easy access in the case troubleshooting is required.

Use Power Over Ethernet (PoE)

Simplify long dock installations by sending both power and data through a single Ethernet cable.

Weatherproof, Marine-Ready Equipment

Choose access points and antennas built specifically for outdoor, high-humidity, salt-air conditions.  If not, guaranteed your equipment will fail after a few short seasons.

Secure Guest Access Management

Offer a guest Wi-Fi portal that manages logins, throttles bandwidth hogs, and improves security for your network.  We offer customized backend management that provides an easy way to view, edit and troubleshoot the Wi-Fi.

Test your WiFi coverage before final mounting at the marina

Bonus Tip:

Test your Wi-Fi coverage before final mounting.

  • Testing at ground level or dock height can save you expensive rework and ensures strong signal both on deck and below deck.
  • Walk-Test with Wi-Fi Analyzer Apps: Use apps like WiFi Analyzer (Android) or AirPort Utility (iOS) to check real-time signal strength at different slip locations — both on deck and below deck.

  • Test During Peak Hours: Measure performance when the marina is busiest (evening or weekends) to understand how load affects coverage and speed.

  • Use Multiple Devices: Test with a phone, tablet, and laptop to see how each device handles the signal in different positions onboard.

  • Check Upload & Download Speeds: Don’t just rely on signal bars — use tools like www.fast.com to confirm consistent performance.

  • Map Dead Zones: Mark any areas where signal drops below -70 dBm, especially inside larger vessels or behind structures like sheds or fuel docks.

  • Simulate a Real Boater’s Experience: Try streaming video or making a VoIP call from below deck — if it lags, reposition APs or consider adding another one closer.

  • Don’t Skip the Dock Ends: Slips at the far ends often suffer most — confirm strong signal and throughput here before signing off.

  • Log Signal Results for Future Reference: Keep a record of signal levels and access point locations for future maintenance or expansion.
